Following a contentious decision at the GB Championships two weeks ago, Josh Taylor (Lochend ABC) enjoyed a triumphant return to the Capital in the final of the London International Invitational held in the Excel Arena on 27 November 2011.

Josh led throughout building a lead of 4-2 in the first round with some excellent straight hitting. Josh’s opponent halved the deficit in the second, but the Edinburgh man maintained his composure to win the bout and has the chance of the gold tomorrow.

GB Boxing’s Matt Holt reported on the bout from Azerbaijan -
“It wasn’t to be for Josh in his first World Championships, as he went down 11-5 to a tough opponent from Kazakhstan. A close first round in which both boxers scored with clean blows finished with Yeleussinov 3-2 to the good. In the second the lead was stretched to 7-3, and despite a valiant last round, the Edinburgh man couldn’t claw it back and the bout closed with the scoreline 11-5.”
This was a tough opening contest for Josh and one he will take great experience from.
Josh Taylor and Scotland’s participation in the 2011 European Championships ended this afternoon, but not before producing an excellent display against a former World Title holder and Olympic athlete.
Josh’s quarter final clash was against 2009 World Amateur Champion Dominico Valetino of Italy. After a slow start, he found himself down 5-3 in the first round but started to show signs of improvement towards the end of the round.
He boxed well in the second round but was still 11-7 down going into the final round.
After a great rally in the last, he won the round by two clear points unfortunatley lost the bout 13-11, a fantastic effort against a World class opponent.
After the withdrawal of Joe Ham through injury and both Aston Brown and Brian Peacock unable to overcome strong opponents, despite good performances, Scotland will have a representative in the Quarter Finals of the European Championships in Ankara, Turkey.

Josh had to work extremely hard to beat Bariadii Javkhlan of Mongolia 11-9 in the final of the 60kg weight category to win Scotland’s only Gold medal of the tournament.

Bringing the curtain down on a hugely successful Home International series boxing fans packed Meadowbank to see Scotland’s Youths and Juniors take on their counterparts from Northern Ireland. Following the first 13 bouts, local hero and Commonwealth silver medallist Josh Taylor maintained his impressive run of form with a convincing victory over former GB and 7 time Irish champion James Fryers.
This was a a great advert for Scottish Amateur Boxing. Congratulations to all involved and a big thank you to the large crowd who turned out to make such an electric atmosphere and spur the Scottish team to victory.
Amateur Boxing Scotland are proud to announce that two of our boxers who performed so well in Delhi 2010 have been invited to join the GB Boxing Development Squad for the London Olympics 2012. Josh Taylor and Iain Butcher join the squad for a training camp in Sheffield and Performance Director of the British Amateur Boxing Association, Rob McCracken said The make-up of the squad reflects performances in 2010 .
