69kg James Dickie SCO v Artem Soloviov UKR
Team Scotland’s 69kg representative James Dickie was up against Soloviov of the Ukraine in the second bout of the competition. From the opening bell James boxed behind the jab in order to measure his opponent and figure out his opponents reactions. The Ukrainian kept patient whilst dominating the centre of the ring, waiting for James to step into his range. Although James delivered some well executed punches with both hands, the Ukrainian used his height and reach advantage wisely winning the first round 2 – 6.
James started the second round positively knowing he must start clawing back the points as soon as possible. Building up attacks making good use of the angles, James used everything in his arsenal to try and penetrate the tight defence of the Ukrainian. Just as James started to gain some momentum the tough Ukrainian slipped James’s Rear Hand and delivered a punishing body – head combination. Although James done well to keep his composure through the barrage of punches, damage to his right eye became evident to the Scotland corner along with a heavy nose bleed. The Scotsman dug deep and bobbed and weaved his way out of trouble, making good use of the ring to evade any further danger. Returning to the corner at the end of the round, the decision was made to retire James due to the injuries to the eye and nose. Irrespective of any potential turn around in the bout, the welfare of the boxer is the most important aspect of the sport – well done to James for showing true Scottish grit.
Final Result: 69kg v Artem Soloviov UKR beat James Dickie SCO – (Dickie RTD)
81kg Scott Forrest SCO v Joakim Sliwa NOR
Scott Forrest was up against tough Norwegian Sliwa in the last 16 of the competition. The Norwegian had stopped his previous opponent in the first round, so a battle of strength looked on the cards. The opening bell witnessed the Norwegian circling the ring on the back foot, evidently looking to draw in Scott to deliver the big rear hand punch. However, the Scotsman realised this and was cunning enough to work behind feints and dummy’s in order to attack at the critical time. With an excellent display of composed ring craft and front foot pressure, it was hard to see how the judges had it 2 – 5 to Norway at the end of the first.
The second round was to prove an awe inspiring display from the charged up Scotsman. With a 3 point deficit to make up, Scott boxed out of his skin for the full 3 minutes. With accurate punching in clusters at both long and close range, Scott sent a message out to all other 81kg boxers during that round. A fantastic round of boxing for Scott, with the round finishing up 12 – 9 in favour of the Scotsman.
The last round Scott used all his experience knowing he had a 3 point lead to protect, but knew he could not let the Norwegian gain the front foot initiative. A cagey but positive round for Scott, he sustained the correct ring craft to protect the lead and secure victory in the third – well done for a fantastic performance Scott!
Final Result: 81kg Scott Forrest SCO beat Joakim Sliwa NOR (14 – 11)
