Boxing Scotland’s nominated Glasgow 2014 CWG squad have just returned from a General Phase Conditioning camp in Portugal, which has kick started the squad preparation programme leading up to the Games.
General phase conditioning, consisting of low – moderate intensity training, is essential to build up the boxers aerobic / strength endurance capacity upon which the more intense energy systems will be built upon over the coming weeks.
The camp itself took place in Villamoura, Portugal, within a world class training camp with world class facilities, including:
• High Performance Gym
• Cross Country Trail
• Outdoor / Indoor Swimming Pools
• Spinning Room
• Fitness studios
• Portable Ice Baths
• Various sport pitches
The squad conducted an average of 3 training sessions daily – 1 technical session, 1 physical session and 1 team / sport competition. The conditioning programme saw the squad take part in various physical sessions, including cross country trail running, swimming, spin, SAQ (Speed, agility & quickness), individual strength programmes, crossfit etc.
Running in parallel with the conditioning aspect were numerous technical sessions, whereby the focus was on enhancing sound technique across all disciplines i.e. punch & defence repertoire, footwork, movement & ringcraft, ballistic & non-ballistic punching, range effectiveness etc.
In addition to the general training sessions, various recovery techniques were also trialled during the camp, including the use of ice baths and low impact sessions to aid and facilitate physical and psychological rest, relaxation and biological regeneration.
The squad will shortly be entering into the ‘Specific’ training phase, whereby training volume is reduced and intensity is increased, in order to develop the anaerobic energy systems.
Boxing Scotland look forward to reporting on the preparation programme as the squad progresses towards the Glasgow 2014 CWG.
