Scotland’s Aaron Cullen wins Gold medal at Under-22 competition in Spain

September 26, 2023 By Ben Holme

SCOTLAND’S Aaron Cullen claimed Gold at the Enrique Rodriguez Cal Memorial Tournament in Palencia, Spain after another composed performance.

The teenager has made a blistering start to life as a senior boxer, winning all three of the international tournaments he has competed in this year.

The Renfrewshire boxer beat Ukraine’s Dmytro Kolisnichenko via a 4-1 split decision, although in truth there was little dispute in the result, with the English judge being the only one to go against him.

Neither boxer was keen to over commit in the first round of the 54kg Final, although a couple of straight right hands from Cullen late in the round helped to edge the round to him from a majority of the judges.

The 19-year-old, who has now competed in 7 international Finals in the past 18 months, continued to edge the contest from a majority of the judges in the second round against the Ukrainian southpaw, although the bout remained cagey.

Kolisnichenko came out aggresive in the third round knowing that he was trailing on the cards, however that created some opportunities for Cullen on the counter as he landed a number of clean blows.

The official scores were 30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 28-29 as the newest member of the GB Boxing squad continued his excellent form.

Boxing Scotland Performance Director and National Coach Craig McEvoy said: “Aaron took the first round to work his opponent out, but he then implemented a smart pattern of movement and punch selection which turned into a convincing win.”

Scotland’s Lennon Mulligan just misses out on place in Final of Under-22 competition in Spain

September 22, 2023 By Ben Holme

SCOTLAND’S Lennon Mulligan just missed out on a place in the Final of the Enrique Rodriguez Cal Memorial Tournament in Spain this afternoon.

The Rob Roy boxer lost a 3-2 split decision to France’s Enzo Borrel in the 51kg Semi-Finals of the inaugural Under-22 competition being held in Palencia, Northern Spain.

The 21-year-old Scot started the contest coming forward behind his jab, as he tried to nail down his slippery opponent, who was landing counter blows on the backfoot, with the French boxer taking the first round from all five of the ringside judges.

However, the 2022 Commonwealth Games representative came out more aggressive in the second round as he closed the distance and was throwing hooks and uppercuts in close, although was still caught by some counters from his French counterpart.

It was a split round from the ringside officials, with three judges siding with the French boxer in the middle round.

That proved to be crucial as despite winning the third and final round clear with some more measured aggression, Lennon would miss out on going for Gold tomorrow after scores of 29-28, 29-28, 28-29, 28-29, 27-30.

Boxing Scotland Performance Director and National Coach Craig McEvoy said: “Lennon started slow in the first round and slowed down to the French boxers pace and was caught with some eye-catching counters.

“But he upped the pace and work-rate in the second round and I thought edged it, before he then won the last round big.

“It is a bit bittersweet as I thought he done enough to win the bout.”

Th result leaves Renfrewshire’s Aaron Cullen as Scotland’s sole remaining boxer in the competition, as he will compete in the 54kg Final tomorrow against Ukraine’s Dmytro Kolisnichenko.

Scotland’s Isa Akram exits Under-22 competition in Spain

September 20, 2023 By Ben Holme

SCOTLAND’S Isa Akram exited the Enrique Rodriguez Cal Memorial Tournament this evening after defeat to Spain’s Victor Catalino.

The home boxer won a unanimous decision at the competition being held in Palencia in Northern Spain.

The result leaves fellow Rob Roy boxer Lennon Mulligan and Renfrewshire’s Aaron Cullen as Scotland’s remaining representatives at the Under-22 competition.

It was a tactical opening first round between the two southpaws, with Catalino edging it with the cleaner blows throughout the opening stanza.

The Scot was forced to take a standing count early in the second round after being caught with a straight left-hand and big right-hook combination.

The Spaniard took each of the first two rounds from all five ringside judges to give the 19-year-old a mountain to climb on the cards.

But Akram recovered from the early setbacks and did a lot better in the third and final round as he consistently landed his jab throughout, despite ultimately losing out via unanimous decision.

Boxing Scotland Performance Director and National Coach Craig McEvoy said: “This is Isa’s first year as a senior boxer and there are definitely a lot of positives to take.

“Overall it was a good performance and he did more of the right things consistently as the bout went on.”

Boxing Scotland Equality Survey 2023-24

September 13, 2023 By Ben Holme

BOXING Scotland is committed to making the sport of boxing open and accessible to all.

As such we are launching an Equality Survey to understand the current picture of the diversity of our participants and members.

Without this data, it will not be possible to identify any current areas of under representation or potential inequalities, and as such, it will make it much more difficult for us to tackle these issues.

This work is being carried out as part of our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and as part of our work towards maintaining the Equality Standard for Sport, Intermediate level.

We will audit and monitor our business activities regularly and take appropriate steps if it appears that our commitment to equality is not being delivered effectively.

Your cooperation in helping us to gather this monitoring information will greatly aid our efforts on two fronts:

1 – To ensure that all staff (paid and unpaid), coaches, officials, board, members and participants are treated fairly regardless of age, race, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or belief.

2 – It will allow us to meet our obligations to maintain the Equality Standard for Sport, Intermediate level which Boxing Scotland was awarded in 2019.

There is a Survey for individuals who are aged 18 and over, and a survey for those aged Under-18. Please see the Survey links below;
