Paul Coleman

2010 World Youth Championships, Baku, Azerbaijan.

March 22, 2010 By Paul Coleman

ABS Ltd is delighted to confirm that it will be sending a team of boxers to the World Youth Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan between 20.04.2010 to 02.05.2010.

The following boxers will attend;

54kg Bryce Stewart (Zetland ABC)

60kg Connor Law (Kelty ABC)

64kg Hugh Gray (Glasgow Phoenix ABC)

69kg Kieran Smith (Springhill ABC)

Team Manager Jimmy Dunn

Caoches Mike Keane, Tony Kerr

R&J Andy Caulfield (direct Invite from AIBA President)

ABS can confirm that the boxers that were initially considered for this tournament were from our Development Coach, Peter Harrison’s, long list of youth boxers that attended the GB Youth assessment in Sheffield in February.

The final team that has been selected was based on the boxers that have been invited back to Sheffield for a further assessment camp. Due to a lack of availabilty substitute boxers have been invited to attend Baku.

It may be of interest to note that ABS did not have this tournament in it’s performance programme so unfortunately we are only able to take four boxers, two coaches and a team manager.

As always selection has proven diffucult, but we are working on a Youth development program including budgets for a range of international tournements which we have never had to date. This will see a similar set up to the current senior program and selection criteria with a Podium and Development squad.

ABS Ltd Youth Championships 2010

March 20, 2010 By Paul Coleman

Winners in BOLD

1993 Born Boxers

51kg Flyweight
RED Corner – Ryan Collins, Irvine Vineburgh Pt 5-4
Collins is the current GB Champ had to dig in hard to win this one from Forbes who had a 3 point lead from round 1 Forbes being a bit taller a good counter puncher made it hard for the come forward style of Collins.
BLUE Corner- Colin Forbes, Noble Art

54kg Bantamweight
RED Corner – Matthew Coyle, Noble Art
Again a clash of styles Coyle a  good box fighter and McCall a  good moving counter puncher and can come forward when needed
Coyle had to push hard from the start to cut down the movement of McCall.Coyle pushed hard in the last round to take the bout to a count back with McCall getting the win which was a fair result.
BLUE Corner – Steven McCall, Greenock Count back 12-12, 26-24

57kg Featherweight
RED Corner – Kevin Skey, Lochend Pts 19-5 It was good to see body shots getting scored for a change. Skey came out fast landing good body shots from the off and bobbing and weaving his way in making it hard for Burton to land many clean shots on the shorter boxer Skey.
BLUE Corner – Thomas Brunton, Denbeath

60kg Lightweight
RED Corner – Martin McCord, Doon Valley Pts 6-3
McCord a come forward southpaw with Hatton style shots on. This bout got a bit messy at times due to the fact both boys went for it from the off and pushed each other all the way McCord landing more big left hands got him the win.
BLUE Corner – Sean Spence, Queensferry

64kg Light Welterweight
RED Corner – Hugh Gray, Glasgow Phoenix RSC 2nd From the start Gray was not looking for any over time pay landing heavy rights to head then left hooks to the body with Quinn trying to go with Gray in round 1 in round 2 Gray just took the pace up and landed a peach of a body shot that some pro’s would have been proud to deliver with the refs only option was to stop the bout for the safety of the boxer.
BLUE Corner – Christopher Quinn, Garnock Valley

69kg Welterweight
RED Corner – Josh Cruickshanks, Zetland
Docherty won this bout with good straight right hands over the top from the none stop advancing Cruickshanks.

BLUE Corner – Mark Docherty, Kingdom 19-2

75kg Middleweight
RED Corner – Robert Forrest, Fauldhouse 12-4
Southpaw Forrest non stop pressure won him the title but Morphew gave him a good run for the title in the last round but left it too late.
BLUE Corner – Kane Morphew Montrose

1992 Born Boxers

57kg Featherweight
RED Corner – Lewis McFarlane, Noble Art
BLUE Corner – Michael Jamieson, Irvine Vineburgh Walkover

60kg Lightweight
RED Corner – Sean White, Leith Victoria
White just could not get a grip of the fast hands and foot work of Law in this bout.
BLUE Corner –Connor Law, Kelty 14-4

64kg Light Welterweight
RED Corner – Christopher McHale, Queensferry
This bout was worth the entrance fee alone both very good box fighter and the pace of this bout just got faster by the round both boxer landing good shots to head and body .In the last round with Harkin pushing it all the way to be a worthy winner.
BLUE Corner – Martin Harkin, Clydebank Osprey 9-5

75kg Middleweight
RED Corner – David McPike, North West 9-7
McPike was 6 points up going in to the last round so maybe a lession will be learned here for him its not over till the last bell ring because Tarr needed a big last round and nearly done it. In the end the result was a fair one.
BLUE Corner – Darren Tarr, Paisley

Commonwealth Federation Championships Update 16.03.2010

March 16, 2010 By Paul Coleman

Latest news from Delhi on 16.03.2010

There are no Scottish Boxers competing today. The team had planned on having a day of R&R but instead have a chance to train at the stadium. The coaches have organised training sessions with other countries at the venue.

This could prove to be invaluable as our boxers will get the chance to spar with possible opponents Commonwealth Games opponents in October this year.

A quick update on Stephen Simmons too –  he was unwell yesterday before his contest but nevertheless wanted to compete. Towards the end of the bout he looked drained.

That means that every boxer has suffered from the dreaded Delhi Belly! Josh Taylor is complaining this morning he is the last to get it.

Some more photos from Delhi are below;
