Boxers encouraged to study WADA’s new Prohibited List for 2022

October 25, 2021 By Paul Coleman

With the increase in athletes aspiring to join the Boxing Scotland performance pathway, it is important that competing members of Boxing Scotland and their coaches are encouraged to study the newly-released 2022 List of prohibited Substances and Methods produced by the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA).

It comes into force on 1st January 2022, replacing the 2021 list, and the 2022 Prohibited List can be accessed by clicking here.

This list shows the substances and methods that are banned by the anti-doping rules. All members are strongly advised to look at the document, even if they have done so before, as there will be new substances listed that were not previously.

It is imperative that boxers and coaches know what is on the list to avoid any inadvertent use of a substance or a method that is included.

WADA has also published a useful document that explains the main changes in the new list.  You can access that document by clicking here.

One of the main changes relates to the use of Glucocorticoids, which are now prohibited in-competition.

A glucocorticoid is typically used to fight inflammation and works with the immune system to treat various health problems. It can be used in the treatment of asthma, allergies, arthritis, osteoarthritis, eczema and other skin conditions and tendinitis.

Remember that, for the purposes of the anti-doping rules, a competition starts at one minute to midnight on the day before a competition starts and extends to the end of that competition.

As always:

  • Make sure that you check your medication to see if it is on the Prohibited List. You can do that using the Global DRO online reference by clicking here.
  • You should also look at the UKAD webpage ‘Checking Your Medication’ by clicking here.
  • Always discuss medication with your doctor explaining that you are subject to the anti-doping rules and the Prohibited List.
  • If you have any doubts, contact substance@ukad.org.uk.

You can also download the UKAD 100% me app by clicking here.
