Latest update from the Brandenburg Cup in Germany;
Mark McKeown Scotland v Sahan Aybay Germany
Mark McKeown was the first Team Scotland representative today, boxing in his preliminary bout in the 60kg category.
The first round saw both boxers trying to get the measure of one another, with Mark trying to create openings against his southpaw German opponent. With several closely contested mid-range exchanges in the round, it was hard to separate the boxers with the score at the end of the first round, however the judges at ringside gave it 4 – 3 in favour of the Scottish boxer.
Mark started the second round fast and positive, and proved early on that his power and strength could give him the edge in the bout. Keeping good composure, Mark applied some solid sustained attacks, switching to both head and body, which saw him take the lead after the second round 9 – 6.
Going into the third Mark had a good 3 point cushion to protect, however he did not risk taking the foot off the pedal as his German opponent was proving to be an ever present threat making sound use of the southpaw jab. As with the second round however, Mark kept a composed head and delivered some quick fire attacks to ensure the momentum remained with Team Scotland. Utilising solid punches to the body with both hands, Mark kept control of the round and maintained his lead throughout. A very good composed performance from Mark, with the score finishing 13 – 10 in favour of Team Scotland’s first representative in the Brandenburg Cup.
