Coach Registration Competency Exam Saturday 11.01.14

January 13, 2014 By Paul Coleman

Our first ever Coach Registration Competency Exams, held across all three Districts on Saturday 11 January 2014, proved to be a great success.

The Coach Competency Exam was designed to ensure all Boxing Scotland Club coaches possess a basic knowledge and understanding of the following subjects:

  • Health & Safety in a gym and competition environment;
  • The AIBA Technical Rules and the AIBA Open Boxing (AOB) Competition Rules;
  • Child Protection;
  • Sparring;
  • Match-Making;
  • Seconding/cornering boxers at events/competitions;
  • Acceptable conduct and the responsibilities of a Boxing coach.

Coaches must score 45 points or higher from a possible 50 points on the questionnaire, in order to be deemed competent to coach within an affiliated Boxing Scotland Club, at events and Championships. Any coaches who sat the Exam on Saturday 11th January 2014 and are not named in the lists below will require further training prior to re-sitting the exam. We woul like to offer our congratulations to the following coaches for passing the exam and who are now deemed as competent Boxing Scotland Club Coaches;

As stated on the questionnaires, coaches can re-sit the exam unlimited times until they pass on the proviso each re-sit is on a different day. Future opportunities to sit the exam will be announced in due course.

All current Boxing Scotland Coach Registration Badges will be valid for the Intermediate Championships on 1st & 2nd February 2014, but will expire thereafter on Monday 3rd February. Any coaches wishing to coach at the Boxing Scotland Scottish Championship Prelims on 22nd & 23rd February 2014 will be required to pass the exam in advance and produce their new Boxing Scotland coach registration badge to receive a coach band and gain entry to the Field of Play. All Boxing Scotland coaches, except those who are AIBA certified, are required to sit the Boxing Scotland Coach competency exam.

All coaches named in the lists above should send their current Boxing Scotland Coach Registration Badge to the Boxing Scotland office, along with an A5 stamped addressed envelope for the return of their new Boxing Scotland coach registration badge. Please send your badge in before Friday 24th January 2014, to guarantee your new badge being issued in time for the Intermediates.

All unregistered coaches should follow the Boxing Scotland coach registration procedure listed in the Boxing Scotland Club Pack.

A huge thank you must go to the following District representatives without whom the exams would not have been possible:

Douglas Pinkett, Vincent Keane and Katrina McGoldrick from the Western District;

Willie Burns, Jimmy Dunn, Jeannie Robertson-Frazier and Frank McLaughlin from the Eastern District

Norman Watt and Donald Campbell from the Northern District.

To discuss additional learning requirements for yourself or one of your coaches, please contact james.docherty@boxingscotland.org or call 07725 100 891.
