SCOTLAND’S Drew Limond coasted into the Quarter-Finals of the EUBC European Youth Championships after an excellent display of boxing.
The 18-year-old won a unanimous decision victory against Greece’s Panagiotis Kostouros in their 67kg Round of 16 contest.
The Keir Hardie boxer, son of distinguished Scottish boxer Willie Limond, started the contest using a switch-hitting style and landed a number of clean blows to take the first round from a majority of judges.
By the second round the teenager had settled into the southpaw stance, and continued to out-box his Welterweight opponent on the back foot.
Although he again took the second round from a majority of the judges, due to the configuration of the scores he needed a strong final round to secure victory, and that is exactly what he produced as the Greek boxer struggled to lay a glove on the Scot, winning with scores of 29-28 from all five judges.
Limond will now box for the chance of a guaranteed medal on Saturday, with Doon Valley’s Kian Govan also set to compete in the Heavyweight Quarter-Finals on the same day.
Unfortunately, Sonny Kerr was unable to join him in the Quarter-Finals as he lost a tough battle in Armenia.
The Byron boxer lost a unanimous decision to Siarhei Paulovich from Belarus in their Light-Welterweight Round of 16 contest in Yerevan.
The Aberdeen teenager lost the first round on all scorecards as he was caught with a few clean blows as he boxed in his usual relaxed style, despite landing some straight right hands of his own.
In the second round Kerr did a lot better defensively as he kept his hands higher, while continuing to land straight right hands on his opponent and deserved more than two of the five judges going his way at the end of the round.
It was a close round in the third, with Kerr continuing to do well. However, a somewhat harsh standing count against the Scot after a right hand helped to seal a unanimous decision for Paulovich.
