THE 2022 EUBC European Men’s Boxing Championships is officially underway in Yerevan, Armenia.
The opening ceremony was held last night, with Scottish boxers Lennon Mulligan (Rob Roy), Tyler Jolly (Bravehearts) and Stephen Newns (Cleland) representing the six-man contingent by carrying out the Scottish flag.
The boxing begins at 3pm this afternoon, however the Boxing Scotland team will have to wait until tomorrow for their first bouts.
The squad, which also includes Matty McHale (Lochend), Reese Lynch (Rob Roy) and Sam Hickey (Lochee), will be hoping to win Scotland’s first senior European Championship medal in 16 years.
The team arrived in Armenia a day later than expected, after their connecting flight to Yerevan was unexpectedly cancelled causing a lay-over in Frankfurt.
However, Boxing Scotland Performance Director and Joint National Coach Craig McEvoy says the six boxers are raring to go now they know how their first opponents will be.
“After a long travel, via an overnight stay in Frankfurt, we have arrived in Yerevan,” Craig said.
“We had the opening ceremony last night, which was very impressive.
“The draw has been done and Matty and Stephen are first up with their bouts tomorrow.
“We are looking forward to getting the competition underway.”
The bouts will all be streamed live on the European Boxing Confederation YouTube channel.
