Building on an impressive performance against England last week Scotland went one better and came out on top following a thrilling day of boxing at the Time Capsule Coatbridge. Scotland got off to winning ways with Glenboig’s John Whyte overcoming a strong challenge from Adam Chartoi. In a cagey encounter Whyte landed enough blows to the body in the final round to come good in the 48kg category.
Sweden responded with two wins on the trot, the first in an explosive encounter between Oliver Flodin and Jordan Beveridge. Despite being tied up at the ropes Flodin landed more punches than his Irvine Vineburgh opponent and ran out a convincing winner.
Alex Bwambale took inspiration from his countryman to outpoint Forgewood’s Liam Sandford who was unlucky to lose to the Swede in a high scoring bout that at one point saw Sandford’s glove caught in the ropes. The subsequent points might not have counted but Bwambale finished the round and the fight stronger as a result.
Greenock’s Craig Cox got Scotland back to winning ways with a convincing victory over Alban Kuci. Cox landed a series of blows to the stomach early on and followed with some sweet jabs that left Kuci with little room for comeback.
Fraser Gorn, one of two boxers from Kelty ABC took the bout to Sweden’s Samuel Jarrar from the off. Jarrar’s composed approach was coming undone as the rounds wore on an in the last Gorn had opened up the fight and outpunched and outpointed his opponent in the toe-to-toe encounters.
Alan Laing from Aberdeen made it three in a row for Scotland as he tackled the rangy Simon Palsson-Hogstrom in the 63kg category. Palsson-Hogstrom had at least a foot height advantage over the Aberdonian but Laing was landing blows to the body early on. The Swede replied by tying Laing up at the ropes and picking him off but Laing was too strong for him and edged a close contest to put Scotland firmly in the lead.
Milad Fatemi got Sweden back to winning ways in a bruising encounter with Johnny Campbell from the Barn ABC. The Coatbridge boxer was determined but failed to connect with scoring blows with many punches hitting Fatemis gloves and arms.
Omar Abdul Majid used his height to great advantage to see off Forgewood’s Lee Murray and get Sweden back in the contest. Building on his clubmate’s impressive performance Kelty’s David Winiarski swung the balance back to Scotland by winning the closest contest of the day. Sweden’s Batti and Winiarski were deadlocked after two count-backs with the judges final decision giving it to Winiarski. Charlie Flynn was the first youth boxing for Scotland on the day and took his 60kg contest against Nurbo Bozan.
Showing no signs of fatigue from last weeks victory against England Kieran Smith of Springhill continued his winning ways again Josef Chedika. It was a measured performance from the Shotts boy who is getting better with every bout. Sahand Tavakoli was made to work hard by Fauldhouse’ Robert Forrest who through everything at the Swede in the first round. Tavakoli could take the punishment and maintained the advantage by picking Forrest off in a bruising second round. Despite a late flurry of jabs from Forrest, Tavakoli had done enough to win a close 75kg contest by two points.
Finishing strongly for Sweden was Roy Alvarez, a smart boxer who danced around Clydebank’s Martin Harkins. Harkins was outpointed in this contest which was an action packed showpiece to finish a great day of boxing.
Scotland ran out worthy winners 7 bouts to 6.
