BOXING Scotland is delighted to share that four individuals from the boxing community have been named as a shortlisted nominee for the Scottish Sports Awards.
Sam Hickey, Niamh Mitchell, Craig McEvoy and Tyler Jolly are all up for an award at the event which will be held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on December 7th 2022.
Commonwealth Games champion Sam Hickey is up for Male Athlete of the Year after winning the Middleweight Gold medal in Birmingham.
That topped what has been a fantastic year for the Lochee boxer, with the Dundonian becoming the first Scottish boxer ever to win more than two European medals in March with a Bronze at the European Under-22’s in Croatia – to add to his European Junior and Youth medals.
The 22-year-old would then break his own record in May by adding a fourth European medal with a Bronze at the senior European Championships – Scotland’s first in 16 years.
Sam is nominated alongside Jack Carlin (Cycling), Duncan Scott (Swimming) and Jake Wightman (Athletics).
Bowhill Miners boxer Niamh Mitchell, meanwhile, has been shortlisted for Young Athlete of the Year after making Scottish boxing history earlier this month.
The 16-year-old became the first female boxer to win Gold at a major international competition as she became European Junior champion in Italy.
The medal was also only Scotland’s 7th European Gold medal at any age category, with the Rosyth boxer emulating the likes of Dick McTaggart and Scott Harrison.
Niamh is shortlisted alongside Kirsty Muir (Skiing), Katie Shanahan (Swimming) and Toni Shaw (Swimming).
Boxing Scotland Performance Director Craig McEvoy has been shortlisted for Coach of the Year after masterminding a record-breaking year for Scottish boxing.
Alongside, the achievements of Sam Hickey and Niamh Mitchell above, O’Neills boxer Jacob Naismith would also win Gold at the European Schools Championships.
However, most impressive of all was Team Scotland’s performance at the Commonwealth Games – which would become Scottish boxing’s most successful Games ever.
For the first time in 92 years Scotland won three Gold boxing medals, with Light-Welterweight Reese Lynch and Light-Heavyweight Sean Lazzerini joining Sam Hickey at the top of the podium, with Bronze medals for Tyler Jolly and Matthew McHale making it five medals in total.
The haul made it the most successful ever Commonwealth Games for Scotland in the boxing ring, as we finished above host nation England in the medal table for the first time in 60 years and finished joint-top of the medal table for Scottish sports.
Craig is shortlisted alongside Bob Christie (Para Lawn Bowls), David Murdoch (Curling) and Steve Tigg (Swimming).
Finally, Tyler Jolly’s stunning 11 second knockout at the Commonwealth Games has been shortlisted as Moment of the Year.
The Bravehearts boxer scored the quickest knockout in Commonwealth Games history as a left-hook to the body quickly dispatched Jamaica’s Daniel Hylton in the Round of 16, as the 23-year-old would go on to win the Bronze medal at the event.
Also shortlisted is Louise Christie’s silver-medal winning ‘Braveheart’ performance; Eilish McColgan winning 10,000m gold at Birmingham 2022; Team Muirhead’s gold medal performance at the Beijing Olympic Games; Laura Muir making it three medals from three majors with European gold; Ross Murdoch coming back from retirement to win a Commonwealth Games bronze medal; Jake Wightman becoming World Champion in Eugene; Micky Yule bringing his daughter onto the podium after winning Commonwealth bronze.
