TEAM Scotland continued our great form at the Gergely Bornemissza Memorial Tournament as four Scottish boxers reached the Finals of the competition in Hungary.
Lochend’s Liam Flynn concluded the day’s action with a stunning first-round stoppage against home boxer Peter Kolozsi inside the first 20 seconds of their 75kg Semi-Final.
That followed on from wins earlier in the day from Sparta’s Thomas O’Reilly and O’Neils’ duo Taylor McMahon and Jacob Naismith.
Unfortunately, Northwest’s Aaron Sarwar was not able to join them in tomorrow’s Finals as he lost Scotland’s opening contest of the day to Italy’s Anthony El Moethy.
The Scot lost a unanimous decision in the 48kg Semi-Final as he looked to try and close the distance against his much taller Italian opponent throughout.
But Team Scotland soon rebounded as we won our second contest against Italian opposition as 2022 European Schools Silver medallist Thomas O’Reilly won a 4-1 split decision against Antonio Vacca.
The Sparta boxer deserved the decision, his third win in three days, in the 52kg Semi-Final as he landed some nice right hands in rounds two and three in what was a cagey affair.
O’Neils boxer Taylor McMahon claimed his third unanimous decision victory so far in the competition as he defeated the third and final Italian opponent of the day in Lopocolo Salvadore.
Taylor advanced to the 57kg Final as he used his height, reach and footwork to keep the bout at long range and landed a number of long left-jabs throughout the contest.
European Schools champion and newly crowned British Junior champion Jacob Naismith sailed into the 54kg Final as he beat Hungary’s Simon Barborik via second-round stoppage.
Jacob forced a standing count at the end of the first round after landing a number of clean blows, with the contest waved off early in the second as the O’Neils boxer continued to overwhelm his opponent with combinations.
Finally, a straight left to the body from the southpaw stance was enough for GB Junior champion Liam Flynn to floor and ultimately defeat Hungary’s Peter Kolozsi in the opening seconds to book his place in the 75kg Final.
