GB boxers Reese Lynch and Sam Hickey complete training camp in Kazakhstan

March 16, 2023 By Ben Holme

COMMONWEALTH Games Gold medal winners Reese Lynch and Sam Hickey have completed a training camp in Kazakhstan.

The Scottish duo were in the Central Asian country for the past week with the GB Boxing squad for a world class training camp at the Akbulak Olympic Centre in Almaty.

This was Rob Roy boxer Lynch’s third training camp of 2023, after having completed a camp in Italy in January and a camp with the USA Boxing Team at the US Olympic Training Centre in Colorado in February as he awaits his first bout of the year.

Lochee’s Hickey also trained in Italy, before travelling to the Bocskai Tournament in Hungary last month where he made his debut as a Light-Heavyweight, coming home with a Bronze medal.

This will be a big year for the Commonwealth Games champions as they look to qualify for next summer’s Olympic Games in Paris – with reigning WBO Light-Welterweight champion Josh Taylor remaining the only Scottish boxer to compete at an Olympics in the past 30 years.

The duo are currently the only Scottish boxers on the GB Boxing squad in Sheffield, although Renfrewshire’s Aaron Cullen, Rob Roy’s Lennon Mulligan and Perth Railway’s Luke Bibby are currently on assessment to potentially join the squad.

Mulligan and Bibby will both be in action in the international vest in Motherwell on Saturday as they top the bill as Scotland have a dual international with Ireland.

There are scheduled to be at least 10 international contests on Saturday 18th March at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, with the boxing getting underway from 7pm.

Tickets for the dual international are priced at £25 and can be bought either at the door of the event (doors open 6:30pm, start time 7pm) or beforehand directly from the participating Scottish boxers.

Alternatively, tickets will be able to bought earlier on the day of Saturday 18th March at the Youth & Elite Golden Gloves Championships for just £5 for those who also buy a one or two-day ticket for those Championships.

Additionally, the event will also be streamed live on Facebook in partnership with JATV Live for the low cost of £1.99.
