Dear Member Clubs,
As many of you may be aware, there is expected to be significant disruption on Friday across Scotland due to Storm Eowyn.
A rare red weather warning has been issued for Scotland’s Central Belt from 10:00 to 17:00 on Friday 24th January 2025 due to high winds, with all but essential travel advised.
Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney in a statement at the Scottish Parliament earlier today said: “We have to be clear, people should not travel and Police Scotland will issue a formal ‘do not travel’ advisory notice shortly.
“Red weather warnings like this are very rare. Our message is simple, please follow the advice from the Met Office and the police, take this seriously and stay safe.”
With this in mind, we have taken the decision to postpone the boxing that was scheduled at the Boxing Scotland Development C/D/E Championships for the evening of Friday 24th January 2025 with the safety of all our members and spectators being of paramount importance.
We are in constant dialogue with the venue operator and we are still very hopeful that the Championships will continue on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th January, although this is outwith our control at this moment in time.
North Lanarkshire Leisure have confirmed that a safety inspection will take place at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell early on Saturday morning to ensure that the venue can operate over this coming weekend.
With this in mind, we have updated our scheduled timings for this weekend, with a later start now scheduled for Saturday to ensure we can confirm early on Saturday morning if the venue will be operational and also to give additional travel time in case there is any disruption on roads etc.
The timings for this weekend will now be as follows;
Saturday 25th January;
Weigh-in – 10am-Noon.
Boxing starts – 1pm.
Sunday 26th January;
Weigh-in – 8am-10am.
Boxing starts – 11am.
Please note, we have also updated the previously published Running Orders to take account of the boxing not taking place on Friday evening.
We would strongly advise that clubs and coaches review the new Running Orders as some bouts may have changed date due to the Championships not beginning on Friday as previously planned.
The delay also means that the following seven weight categories will not box to a completion over this weekend;
- Youth 2008 C 60kg
- Youth 2008 C 67kg
- Elite C 63.5kg
- Elite C 67kg
- Elite C 71kg
- Elite D 71kg
- Elite C 80kg
These Finals will be carried over to a later date to be agreed with the participating clubs and Boxing Scotland following the conclusion of the weekend’s boxing.
We thank you for your understanding on this matter we will share further information as soon as we have it.
In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact competitions@boxingscotland.org with any further queries.
Yours in Sport,
Boxing Scotland
