After the success of the BRING BACK BOXING Series which included the first Scottish Womens International bout , Amateur Boxing Scotland have launched a campaign to identify talented women athletes aged between 12 and 29 years, with a view to developing International class boxers and the Olympics in 2016 in mind.
Next year at the London Olympics, history will be made when Womens Boxing is included as a sport for the very first time, removing the barrier from the last all male Olympic sport. This is a massive boost for Womens boxing and testament to the huge increase in interest Worldwide, with 120 federations now including registered female boxers.
On the launch of the JUST BOX Campaign, Scottish Womens Boxing Coach Mark Geraghty said There is potentially a wealth of unearthed female boxing talent in Scotland. With Amateur Boxing Scotland now putting a real focus on the development of boxers, there is a major opportunity for us to identify and nurture women boxers, some of whom may then show the potential to compete Internationally and possibly even show enough promise for Olympic consideration come 2016
Geraghty went on to say We are now actively looking for young women to apply for places at our National Assessment Camps being planned where selected women will be assessed on strength to weight, discipline, weight management, fitness, agility, pad work, sparring and general boxing ability. Geraghty said Girls and women currently involved in fistic forms of martial arts such as kickboxing, may be able to make a quick transition to the amateur boxing ranks. We are looking to dramatically increase the number of women boxing in Scotland, which can only help us to develop a strong Scottish Womens Squad capable of competing on the International stage.
If you feel you have the potential as a female boxer, you can register your interest on the Amateur Boxing Scotland website giving your Age, Height, Weight and Level of Experience in combat sports or other sports. We will then invite successful candidates to the assessment camps to be put to the test.
