Princes Street Gardens Set To Host First Ever Boxing Event When Capitals Clash

July 25, 2011 By Paul Coleman

boxing princes streetLothian based boxing fans are set to be treated to a boxing extravaganza this September when Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens hosts its first ever boxing event. Entitled “When Capitals Clash”, some of the UK’s top amateur talent will be on display as boxers from Edinburgh and London lock horns in an explosive 20 bout contest.

With the full backing of Edinburgh City Council, the historic event will take place on Friday September 9th 2011.  Organised by Amateur Boxing Scotland, the open air showpiece will give the 2000 fans in attendance a feast of fantastic Friday Fight Night entertainment.

This forms part of Amateur Boxing Scotland’s BRING BACK BOXING campaign to encourage young people to get involved with amateur boxing, as a fun sport which promotes fitness and discipline. Bradley Welsh who is promoting the event on behalf of ABS said “We are keen to let people see that boxing is for everyone and to change the current perception some people have of the sport. We really want to encourage kids back into boxing gyms and off street corners.”

Fans can look forward to witnessing a night of exciting bouts featuring European and British Champions as well as Olympic and Commonwealth Games hopefuls. Amateur Boxing Scotland Chairman Richard Thomas said “The UK Amateur Boxing scene is thriving at the moment and this event will showcase some of the best boxing talent we have in this country. Edinburgh and London are two cities with great boxing traditions and we hope this event will give fans a night to remember and whet their appetite for more, we hope to hold similar events in Glasgow and further north.”

Amateur boxing has seen a major upturn in popularity in recent years, with this popularity set to intensify as London 2012 and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014 approach. Edinburgh has already played host to two sell out International contests earlier this year at Meadowbank Stadium (Scotland v Wales and Scotland v Northern Ireland). These events were organised as part of the BRING BACK BOXING campaign, designed to increase awareness and popularity of the sport in Scotland. It is hoped that September’s glamour Princes Street Gardens event will be the catalyst for even more major boxing events to be staged.
