Ravenscraig Cashback Assessment A Storming Success!

June 12, 2012 By Paul Coleman

On Saturday 09th June 12, Ravenscraig Sports Facility played host to 6 of the Central Belt clubs who were taking part in the 2nd phase Cashbcack assessment.

Academy boxers from Argo ABC, Duries ABC, Forgewood ABC, Greenock ABC, Meadowbank ABC and Zetland ABC were all on show demonstrating all the new skills taught since they completed phase 1 in March 2012.

A staggering 130 plus spectators turned out to support the 80 boxers on assessment – a great support for a great programme! The spectators were treated to different warm-up routines the youngsters have been doing, from skipping to a plyometric obstacle course! The youngsters were then assessed on bent arm punching and combination punching – stringing it all together in a shadow box show piece with the music roaring!

The club coaches then demonstrated a pad work session with one of their boxers, followed by a bag work session. All the boxers then took to the floor to conduct their partner work session, with one boxer presenting an open palm of their glove to act as a target for their partner to punch.

The display came to a close finishing with a crowd pleasing team relay race, with the teams of 6 competing against other clubs in a variety of ‘themed’ sprints.

A big thanks must go to all those involved – the Academy boxers for all their hard work over the last few months, the coaches for their outstanding commitment and enthusiasm for the programme, and to the family in friends who have travelled to come and give their support at all of the assessments.

There is no question the Academy is going from strength to strength, numbers are increasing each week along with club participation. This can only enhance and improve the level of our sport in Scotland – this venture will ensure we can provide the right ‘apprenticeship’ that the youngsters require to give them a sound foundation to go on and compete at all levels, both nationally and internationally.

Any club interested in getting involved in the Academy please contact the ABS Cashback Coordinator.
