When Dominic O’Rourke, All Ireland Performance Director, requested if Scotland could supply a team to box his school and junior development squad, we jumped at the chance to provide our young boxers with a tough test.
The ABS Development Squad is currently working very hard to give our boxers the opportunity to compete at the highest level Internationally and this trip helped tremendously in gaining experience against top opposition.
Sixteen young Scottish boxers (fourteen of which making their International debut) boxed against a very good Irish team on Saturday 24th September at the Roachestown Park Hotel in Cork.
The aim of the contests was for our boxers to compete against one of Europe’s top boxing nations, who have already gained a wealth of International experience and honours at school, junior, youth and senior levels. The young Ireland team boxed very well as expected, showing a great desire to win. Scotland’s young boxers were competitive and worked very hard in every contest, following instructions given from the coaches. They will have learned a great deal from this International match.
This was an extremely valuable trip with our boxers learning to travel and box as a team. We will now go back to the gym and work hard as we head towards our next International contests, details of which will be communicated in due course.
