The weekend saw the second installment of open invitational training in our Scottish High Performance Centre, and with no fewer than 34 boxers in attendance from all over the nation the session was a great success.
As communicated last week, it is absolutely essential that the training process at the start of the new season is geared towards technical development and improvement.
During this GENERAL phase of training, after the majority of boxers have rested for a period over the summer, the following 3 areas must be adhered to in order to provide the boxers with the best foundation before the competition schedule gets underway:
– Develop general physical condition (AEROBIC PLATFORM) – carried out by high volume but low intensity training.
– Emphasis on technical development – covering full technical repertoire i.e footwork, punching & defending, along with motor skill improvement via coordination and agility drills.
– Periodised training to MAXIMISE PERFORMANCE – highlighting 2 to 3 main contests / competition (TARGET COMPETITION) for each individual, then programming the year or season training cycle to maximise performance at the target competition.
The session conducted on Saturday covered 3 main stations – technical partnerwork, themed equipment session and coordination /agility groundwork.
With the main group broken down into 3 sub-groups by weight order, each carried out a round robin of the 3 stations, with between 15 to 20 mins spent at each station.
So as to develop the essential aerobic / endurance platform, each station ran continuously for the period rather than a fixed round duration i.e 4 x 3’s etc. Each station was carried out at a low – moderate intensity, ensuring that not only the correct energy system was being utilised but also skill development and improvement was maximised.
Boxing Scotland look forward to delivering another set of open invitational sessions this weekend, times as follows:
FEMALE Senior & Youth (ALL LEVELS) Saturday 30th August 10am – 12pm
MALE Senior & Youth (OPEN CLASS ONLY) Saturday 30th August 12pm – 2pm
