Team managers report from the Scotland select v Switzerland select held on 9-11 May 2014 in the Boxclub Noble Art Boxing, Basel, Switzerland.
50kg – Sally Birrell v Elliani Pillegi
Sally boxed very well against a slightly younger but more experienced opponent. Sally exerted constant pressure throughout the bout and demonstrated extremely effective movement round the ring. Coupled with a good variety of punches, Sally recorded a well deserved points victory.
70kg – Coner Ferguson v Ismael Camera
Coner used his height and reach to great advantage to keep a very aggressive opponent at bay. He boxed behind a very effective jab, drifting in and out, scoring good combinations. Coner was in control throught the contest and finished up a comfortable points winner.
66kg Gemma Brodie v Martina Steiner
Gemma performed outstandingly well in the first two rounds of this contest and appeared to be slightly ahead of her opponent. However, her ferocious work rate in the first two rounds took it toll and Gemma tired somewhat in the last two rounds to lose the bout on points.
70kg Gardner Moore v Anais Kistler
Unfortunately, Gardner’s opponent weighed in well below her stated weight so this became an exhibition bout. Despite this setback, Gardner performed very well showing good composure, ring movement and controlled the bout throughout.
75kg Kieran Smith v Amir Orfia
Kieran’s opponent used his experience to employ spoiling tactics such as frequent holding and leading with his head. This somewhat spoiled the contest and unfortunately Kieran ended up losing on points in a fight that could have gone either way.
81kg Scott Forrest v Uke Smalji
Scott had to train most of the day he was boxing to make weight. As a result, his performance on the evening was a little lacklustre and it was no real surprise when he lost the bout on points.
Overall this provided our boxers with some valuable experience and the Scottish delegation was extremely well looked after by our Swiss hosts. All members of the team behaved and performed very well and were a credit to Scotland.
