Scotland v Ireland report – 24&25 May 2013

May 29, 2013 By Paul Coleman

A select group of Scottish and Irish Junior and Schoolboy boxers completed a two-day international at the Tyholland Community Centre in Co. Monaghan on 24 and 25 May 2013.

On day one Ireland won 15-14 and on day two, scores were tied at 13-13. Overall, it finished 28-27 to Ireland, who claimed the McGuigan Cup. It is worth noting that all of the Scotland team boxed twice against 2 separate Irish teams which makes the overall result even more impressive given the Irish had a fresh team on day two.

Coach Danny Lee commented “The young and developing Scottish team did itself proud by only losing by one contest and our congratulations go to Ireland for winning the McGuigan Cup. Many positives will be taken from this test of our young developing team including travel, weight management, attitude and determination and this is exactly what the ABS Development Coaches were seeking.

The Schoolboy boxers, in particular, have been a credit this year, after a great GB’s run by ABS at Ravenscraig, where they scooped 10 Gold’s and 13 Silver.”

“On some occasions you can find that one team is superior to the other, said Paddy Gallagher of the IABA. But both sides were very evenly matched in Monaghan and the standard of boxing was very high from Ireland and Scotland over the two days.  Both sides deserve enormous credit for a very competitive international and a marvellous occasion.

The attitude and respect on display from Scotland’s boxers, coaching staff and officials was exemplary.

I was particularly impressed with your younger team in the schoolboy section with Ryan Ball being the stand out performer, in my opinion, over the weekend.”
