Scotland v Norway Saturday 18 January 2014 – Bout Reports

January 20, 2014 By Paul Coleman

Team Scotland

William Stuart V Stian Borreson 56kg Junior SCOT 1 NOR 0

With a good start to the bout from William, he continually pushed his opponent back switching from body to head punches and having some good success in the process. However the Norwegian wasn’t coming all the way to Scotland just to make up numbers and worked well when they both met in close range. It was William’s punches that were landing with more venom and over the 3 rounds he ran out the deserved winner.

Lewis Hay V Anders Eggan 60kg Youth   SCOT 2 NOR 0

Lewis had to be at his very best against this very adaptable opponent who was switching from long range to mid then short in order to land some clean blows. The Norwegian had a good work rate but Lewis dug deep and out worked him, always finishing the exchange with the last punch thus catching the judges eye. This continued throughout the contest and it was no surprise when Lewis had his hand raised.

John Stevenson V Rolf Olsen  60kg Youth   SCOT 3 NOR 0

This was a Tactical contest with John getting his spot on, keeping the shorter stockier Norwegian at bay with long range punches then adjusting his feet when the Norwegian came forward. This enabled John to negate his opponent’s attack and then launch his own again. This was Johns first contest at his new weight of 60kg and also his first over 3 x 3 minutes so an excellent all round performance from John.

Aidan McGlynn V Oscar Heggan Furuland 64kg Youth   SCOT 4 NOR 0

Both boxers started at breakneck speed with literally hundreds of punches thrown in the first round! The better and cleaner punches came from Aidan who hardly took a step back during the full contest but always had to keep his work rate up to compete with the Norwegian boxer who was quite willing to stand toe to toe with Aidan. Aidan was getting the upper hand at the end of the exchanges and this carried on for the full 3 rounds. It was a testament to both boxers fitness that they were able to maintain such a pace. There was only one winner at the end with Aidan having landed the cleaner blows and fantastic work rate getting him the nod by unanimous decision.

Connal McDonald V Jonas Sonsteby 91kg Youth   SCOT 5 NOR 0

The Norwegian boxer arrived late into Aberdeen on Friday as the car he was traveling in unfortunately left the road during a snow storm on the way to the Airport. So he was in no mood to let this hinder his performance during the next 9 minutes of boxing. Sonsteby proved to be a tough rugged come forward boxer who was willing to trade blows with Connal when and if required. This made the bout a great crowd pleaser swinging one way then the other with both boxers having a share of success. Overall,  Connal was getting the lead off telling shots on target and normally getting the last punch in after most exchanges. We were all pleased to hear the decision had went in favour of Connal

This was an excellent start by Team Scotland. Going in at the interval 5 – 0 this was the first time most of the Youth Boxers had boxed over the 3 x 3 Minute Rounds but all came through well and showed tremendous determination in securing their wins.

The next five bouts saw our Senior Elite Boxers all boxing over 3 x 3 Minute rounds with no head guards – again a first time for many of the Scottish Boxers

Gary Rae V Ali Srour    SCOT 5 NOR 1

Gary came in at short notice to take this contest and proved he deserved to get the call up, The Norwegian dictated the first round moving in and out of range with some very fast footwork and using his trunk defence to his advantage, making Gary miss with most of his punches. Gary was struggling to find his range in the early stages of the bout against this experienced and durable Norwegian boxer. However, as the contest progressed Gary started to find his range and landed some decent clean shots with the Norwegian having to be on his toes as the Scotsman took the contest to him willing to stand and trade if he had to.  Gary had some decent success especially in the third round but the first two rounds had went to Srour and he was announced the winner

Mark McKeown V Hadi Srour   SCOT 5 NOR 2

What a contest for the crowd this was with both boxers showing tremendous skill, power and determination in their quest for victory. Mark took a little time to adjust to the long range boxer who boxed, moved and generally made life difficult for Mark in the first round. In round two, Mark changed his tactics and upped the pace to close down Srour and landed some very powerful shots both to body and head.  It was game on now with it looking like 1 round each going into the last,  Mark started where he left of in round 2 with the Norwegian feeling the pace and holding on every time Mark closed him down. The crowd kept Mark pushing on right til the final bell and it really looked like he had done enough in the second and third roundfinishing the stronger and fitter to justify the win.

Unfortunately,  it was a split decision going to Srour! Marks fitness levels were fantastic and a credit to his club and Team Scotland. On this showing he was definitely a candidate for the best boxer of the night and can take many positives from his performance.

Jason Easton V Salavt Khatuev   SCOT 5 NOR 3

With a good opening exchange from Jason, the Norwegian soon found his range and started to land some decent eye catching blows. Jason was working at a decent pace but his opponent seemed to just land the final blow in any exchanges. This followed into round two where both boxers had some success with the Norwegian shading the round slightly. Jason started round 3 at a great pace and maintained it throughout with Khatuev now feeling the pace and boxing more on the back foot. This was Jason’s round but as we thought he probably lost the first two and at the end the Norwegian got the nod.

Boris Chrichton V Ask Vang   SCOT 6 NOR 3

Having won the first 5 contests and now Norway winning the first 3 after the interval we really needed to get back in the winning way! Boris had previously defeated the Norwegian by way of a stoppage the last time they met but it was a different story this time with the Norwegian determined not just to survive the 3 rounds but to win the contest. Boris, however, had other plans and landed some big punches from every angle on Vang who took them well and came back with his own decent punches there was not a lot in the contest with both boxers having some success but Boris pushing his opponent back and landing the bigger punches more frequent ensured the win.

Lewis Benson V Johan Seliba SCOT 7 NOR 3

Lewis looked good from the off landing his trademark long left Jab at will, then following up with a straight back hand on a number of occasion. Seliba struggled to find a way to land his own punches as Lewis boxed and moved before the Norwegian had a chance to counter. This continued throughout the contest with Lewis dictating the pace and keeping his opponent at bay smart footwork and fast hands ensured that Scotland was going to end the night with a win for the home crowd

A great night of boxing night and a great result for Team Scotland winning by 7 – 3.
