SCOTLAND’S Isa Akram exited the Enrique Rodriguez Cal Memorial Tournament this evening after defeat to Spain’s Victor Catalino.
The home boxer won a unanimous decision at the competition being held in Palencia in Northern Spain.
The result leaves fellow Rob Roy boxer Lennon Mulligan and Renfrewshire’s Aaron Cullen as Scotland’s remaining representatives at the Under-22 competition.
It was a tactical opening first round between the two southpaws, with Catalino edging it with the cleaner blows throughout the opening stanza.
The Scot was forced to take a standing count early in the second round after being caught with a straight left-hand and big right-hook combination.
The Spaniard took each of the first two rounds from all five ringside judges to give the 19-year-old a mountain to climb on the cards.
But Akram recovered from the early setbacks and did a lot better in the third and final round as he consistently landed his jab throughout, despite ultimately losing out via unanimous decision.
Boxing Scotland Performance Director and National Coach Craig McEvoy said: “This is Isa’s first year as a senior boxer and there are definitely a lot of positives to take.
“Overall it was a good performance and he did more of the right things consistently as the bout went on.”
