TEAM Scotland’s campaign at the EUBC European Youth Championships came to an end after Kian Govan lost a split decision in his Heavyweight Quarter-Finals.
The Doon Valley boxer lost out on a 4-1 split decision to Sweden’s Elwin Mayue-Belezika at the competition held in Yerevan, Armenia.
The Scot had started brightly as he won the first round as he made use of his height and reach advantage to land jabs and straights against his southpaw opponent.
However the Swede, who was a Bronze medallist at last year’s European Youth Championships in Bulgaria, took the second round as he was more aggressive and closed down the distance.
The 92kg contest was still there to be won by both boxers in the third round, with a key moment in the final round coming in bizarre circumstances as Govan was given a standing count, despite no blow having been landed, as the Scot appeared to be trying to adjust his gumshield.
Earlier in the day Scottish Welterweight Drew Limond lost a unanimous decision to Aleksei Gukov from Russia, as the southpaw used his height and reach to good effect to win each of the three rounds in their 67kg Quarter-Final.
