Taylor eyes Olympic selection ahead of Scottish Championships Final
Josh Taylor will be looking to building on his impressive displays since returning from Delhi last November with a win at this year’s Scottish Championships. Taylor will feature in one of nine Men’s Senior bouts at the Time Capsule in Coatbridge on Friday 25th March.
The Commonwealth Games silver medallist is looking to make the step up from the GB Development Squad to the Podium Squad this year. A Scottish Championship title should set up the Lochend boxer ahead of international trips to Finland, Turkey for the European Championships and Azerbaijan for the AIBA World Championships. Firstly Taylor must overcome the strong challenge from former Scottish featherweight champion Darren Traynor from Granite City ABC in what promises to be a thrilling contest.
Also on the bill is Taylors Commonwealth Games team mate Aston Brown.
After the Championships Aston will travel to Sheffield for an assessment with the GB Squad. With his old foe Callum Smith moving up weights, does this allow Aston, a top talent, a place on the squad?
Another Team Scotland member, Renfrewshire ABC’s Joe Ham will also be competing. Whilst the bill will include the Women’s Senior Final bouts featuring Scotland’s first internationalist Louise Mitchell versus Granite City’s Katie Atkin at 60kg and Leith Victoria’s Magdalena Berns bringing the fight to Stephanie Kernachan of Newarthill ABC at 51kg.
The full line up promises some mouth watering contests with District Champions taking on Commonwealth squad members, Olympic hopefuls looking to stake their claim on GB squad places and some of Scotland’s professional stars of the future keen to leave a their mark on the amateur game.
Speaking ahead of this year’s Championships, Amateur Boxing Scotland Chairman Richard Thomas said;
The standard of boxing at this years Championships so far has been excellent, with some very close, exciting bouts. What it has done is given us an idea for selection into the Elite programme at some weight categories, but has given us selection problem at other weights- a good problem to have. Lets see what the Finals bring
